Having a happy spouse or partner is associated with better physical health outcomes and a longer lifespan. A large study of nearly 2,000 couples found that having a happy partner predicted better self-rated health, less physical impairment, and more frequent exercise, even after controlling for one’s happiness levels. Another long-term study spanning 85 years concluded that satisfying personal relationships were stronger predictors of physical health, mental well-being, and longevity in old age compared to factors like career achievement, diet, or exercise.
Close relationships provide emotional support, reduce stress, and increase feelings of happiness and belonging. The Harvard Study of Adult Development, one of the most extended studies on happiness, concluded that strong social connections and relationships were the most significant predictors of both happiness and health over a lifetime. While intimate partnerships clearly offer significant benefits, it’s important to note that other close relationships like family and friends can also contribute to happiness and health.
